Field Day

We are hoping that Field Day will happen this week. It will be Friday if weather allows.

Reading

This week we are reading about Thomas Edison and Ben Franklin. Our skill this week is Problem/Solution. We shared a few examples in the classroom today. We also found a few idioms as we read. The students came up with some funny idioms they have heard in the past.

Every Vote Counts

Our class voted last week. Ask your child some questions about the election. They may know a little more than you think.

Science Poster

The students have a poster due tomorrow based on the safety list discussed in class yesterday. They already have the poster. Their posters are due tomorrow. They should represent one of the safety rules discussed with a picture. Many of the students turned them in today.

Field Day

As a reminder to parents, please have your child dressed appropriately for Thursday. They will be outside participating in activities most of the afternoon. Tennis shoes would be great! We look forward to an exciting day.

Science

Next Monday the students will take a Science test. One big part of the test will be drawing and labeling a circuit with a switch. It might sound difficult, but every child has a diagram already drawn out in their notebooks. Ask them to draw an example and label it. If they don't know all the components they still have until Monday to study.

Scholastic Book Orders

I am sending home order forms for people who are interested. Some parents earned a gift card last order from ordering online. This would be a good time to use it. Enjoy! (The link is on the right side of this page.)

Just in case you needed the information again...

If you want the easiest way feel free to order online. Here is the information:

Online Ordering Information
Web address: scholastic.com/bookclubs
Class Activation Code: J3G7L

Dear Parent,

Now it's easier than ever to find the perfect books for your child -- shop our NEW online Book Clubs Web site. Choose from a much-wider selection of books than in the printed flyer. Plus, you can send your orders directly to me online and use your credit card to pay.

Best of all, we earn a FREE book for the classroom library every time a parent places an order online.*

It's so simple! Here's how it works:

* SIGN UP at www.scholastic.com/bookclubs. On the parent page, click the "Register" button in the "First Time Here?" section. Register for your own user name and password. When prompted, enter the one-time Class Activation Code shown above. This unique code ensures that your order is sent to me.

* SELECT the books you'd like to order -- choose from thousands of titles -- many more than in our monthly flyers.

* SEND your order to me online by the due date and your child's books will be delivered directly to my classroom.

Ordering online is fast, easy, and secure.

Of course, you can still order using the form from the printed flyer. But why not see for yourself how convenient it is to order online?

Science Question

Here is a question we discussed briefly this morning.

What’s one way that plants help people?
a) They add oxygen to the air.
b) They add carbon dioxide to the air.
c) They add oxygen to the soil.
d) They add carbon dioxide to the soil.

Conferences

I sent home a conference sheet with all the students yesterday. I received some back today. Everyone has been placed with a time that turned one in to me. If you have a conflict with the time feel free to send a note in and we can change it if needed. Thank you.

Cross-Country

Each student received a Cross-Country form to take home today. All the details for the race are included on the form. If you have any further questions contact the office and they should be able to answer any specifics.

Reading

Today we read a neat article about a girls baseball league (Think "League of their Own"). We are talking about author's purpose and why an author would write a story. The students did very well with this today and I look forward to what tomorrow will bring.

Math

We just finished Topic 3 (Place Value) last week. Each student received his/her graded test today.

We started addition and subtraction of whole numbers today. We worked on counting up in subtraction and doing mental addition. This gives students a better understanding of what is happening when they are subtracting or adding rather than just producing an answer. The next few days will be spent learning how to add and subtract larger numbers and how to accurately check the work.

Reading Counts

I am sending home a Reading Counts report with each student today. Students should have a minimum of 10 points at this point in the school year. If you see that your child doesn't meet that minimum, encourage them after they are finished with a book they are reading to take a test on it. The report will show you how many tests they have taken and if they have passed the test. Each student has a goal and each student knows their goal.

Assignment Books

I thought I would clarify some information for parents. Every night, Monday through Thursday, the students will have some type of homework. They should also have assignments written in their assignment book each day. If you child doesn't have it written down for some reason, ask them to explain. Also, if your child had his or her name on the board it would be written in there as well. The spelling words for the week should also be copied down and written on Friday for that week.
