Science Question This Morning

How do warm-blooded animals keep their temperatures constant?

a)
a) They use calories from food to make heat.
b)b) They stay active.
c)c) They draw heat from sunshine.
d)d) They burn fossil fuels.

Ask your child if they now can answer correctly. This was a question that most didn't realize.

Schedule Change

We recently had to do some shuffling of schedules in the building to accommodate some other grade levels, so our schedule has changed slightly.

We will now have Media Center on Fridays. All books will need to be turned in for a student to check new books out.

Music will now be Monday mornings which means recorders should be here with each child.

Wednesday is Art.

Thursday is Physical Education. Each student needs to remember to bring gym shoes if they come to school with dress shoes or sandals.

Art To Remember

Each student was given their "Art To Remember" envelope this evening. If you are interested in ordering, the due date is October 11th with payment included. If you don't want to order you simply keep the envelope as a souvenir.

Math

There was some question on last night's homework dealing with place value. For example, students were given a number, 3,358, and asked what the relationship of the 3s would be. We talked about in class that as the values get larger from 10s to 100s each place is ten times greater. So 3,000 would have been 10 times greater than 300. I hope that clears up a little of the confusion.

Reading

Tonight the students have a vocabulary sheet along with a comprehension sheet. Make sure your child always checks to see if there are two sides. The only time we wouldn't do both sides might be on a math sheet and each student will have it written in their assignment book.

Reminder:

Don't forget to build that routine of 20 minutes of reading a night. Thank you!

Math

We started working on a new topic in math today. This topic is completely dedicated to place value. The students worked on writing numbers in three different ways (Standard, Expanded, and Word Form). Quiz your child on large numbers and how to properly say big numbers up to the millions. For example, write a number on a sheet of paper (2,432,700) and see if they can say it (Two million, four hundred thirty-two thousand, seven hundred). We will also begin to identify the value of a specific digit. (Example: the 4 in 53,420 is worth 400). Today was our first day and the students were off and running.

Today in Math

Here is a little bit from the math we did today. The students were called on and were able to write and design the following problem on the screen.

Thanks Galeena for the array!

This table was a team effort.
